La Maratón de Pacasmayo fue creada en 2008 por Steve Cambridge, un voluntario del Cuerpo de Paz de los Estados Unidos de América, que tuvo esta idea como una alternativa para contribuir al desarrollo económico local.
La maratón se creó con la finalidad de aprovechar la belleza natural de Pacasmayo, eligiendo diversidad de tipos de suelos y paisajes, sumados a la calidez de su gente.
